European Parliament 

Plenary week 
On Monday, the Parliament announced that plenary would be shortened to just Monday afternoon and Tuesday in a bid to avoid coronavirus contamination. The Parliament has also cancelled its next session in Strasbourg at the end of the month. This session which was scheduled for 30 March until 2 April will become a mini-session instead.

European Commission 

Directorates-General 

Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (EMPL) 
Gregorio DE CASTRO has replaced Maria IGLESIA as Head of Unit C4 (Hungary, UK, Ireland, Portugal) in an acting capacity.  

European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) 
On Tuesday the Commission appointed Andrea KOULAIMAH GABRIEL as Director of Directorate D (Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America and Pacific). The date of effect will be determined later. Since October KOULAIMAH GABRIEL has been Head of Unit, Field Network. 

European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) 
On Tuesday, the Commission appointed Minna Kristiina VUORIO as Director. The date of effect will be determined later. VUORIO has previously worked in the General Secretariat of the Council as Translator, open source intelligence Analyst, Head of the Finnish language unit and Head of the resources and translation support unit. 

Eurostat 
Petra METZMEIER-WEISS is the new HR Business Correspondent, filling a vacant position.  

Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (GROW) 
Jo DE COCK has left his position as HR Business Correpondent, leaving a vacant position.  
Henning EHRENSTEIN replaces Robert STRAUSS as Head of Unit E1 (Services Directive and Policy) in an acting capacity.

EU Institutions and Agencies 

Committee of the Regions 

Rapporteurs: 
The ECON Commission has appointed Elio DI RUPO (PES, BE) as rapporteur for the draft opinion on ‘Economic Governance Review’. The Commission also appointed Tadeusz TRUSKOLASKI (EA, PL) as rapporteur for the draft opinion on ‘Single Market Barriers Report and Single Market Enforcement Action Plan’. Eddy VAN HIJUM (EPP, NL) has been appointed rapporteur for the ECON draft opinion on ‘SME Strategy’. 

Court of Justice 
Jean Richard DE LA TOUR has been appointed as advocate-general to the European Court of Justice. The previous French advocate-general, Yves BOT, passed away last year. 

European Defence Agency 
Jiří Šedivý has been appointed Chief Executive. 

Public Affairs 
GPlus Europe 
Richard STERNEBERG leaves the company, where he was a partner. He joins the global law firm DLA Piper.

National News 

Belgium 
King Philippe has extended Patrick DEWAEL’s (Open VLD) and Sabine LARUELLE’s (MR) assignment to form a government until the 16 March. 

Greece 
Katerina SAKELLAROPOULOU assumed her post as Greece’s first female President this week, taking over from Prokopis PAVLOPOULOS. 

Romania 
The Romanian parliament was due to vote on the Florin CITU-led cabinet on Thursday. CITU, who was Minister for Finance in Ludovic ORBANs cabinet, had been put forward by President Klaus IOHANNIS. However, CITU resigned as Prime Minister-Designate before the vote could take place.  

Slovenia 
The Slovenian parliament will vote on the new coalition proposed by Janez JANSA this Friday. JANSA’s proposals consist of 16 ministers. 7 cabinet members will be from the Slovenian Democratic Party, 4 from the Modern Centre Party, 3 from New Slovenia and 2 from the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia.
