Smart appliances come to EU Sustainable Energy Week (#SmartAtHome)

Demonstrating how interoperability will work with Smart Appliances

• EEBUS and Energy@home develop open language for interoperability for smart home appliances that will help deliver consumer energy management solutions
• Live demonstration at CECED, the European Committee of Domestic Equipment Manufacturers

Smart, Internet-enabled appliances are entering our homes, moving our lives towards ever-greater connectivity. But how can we ensure that this increased connectivity does not also increase the complexity of home appliances for users who seek simple solutions? During European Sustainable Energy Week 2017, EEBUS, Energy@home and several leading European Manufacturers of home appliances demonstrate the answer: home appliances that speak the same language, and communicate with energy managers, Smart Home Systems and with each other in an integrated home ecosystem, providing the benefits of smart energy management for consumers. EEBUS and Energy@home are two leading, non-profit associations that promote energy efficient technologies for the Smart Home and Internet of Things (IoT). During the European Utility Week in 2014, they announced their intention to cooperate on the creation of a common, open language to enable interoperability of Smart Appliances with a specific focus on energy management solutions.

The successful outcome of this cooperation will be presented during a live demonstration at European Sustainable Energy Week 2017, which takes place in Brussels, from 19th - 25th June.

The demonstration will feature several home appliances, from different manufacturers, interacting with a home energy manager. It will show a practical application of different home energy management scenarios and smart grid interactions. The interactions between the appliances and the energy manager are enabled through a neutral language called SPINE (Smart Premises Interoperable Neutral-message Exchange) (1) . SPINE was developed by EEBUS and Energy@home for device communication. It is based on and included in the improved Smart Appliances REFerence ontology (SAREF), that was developed for the interoperability of smart appliances and sponsored by the European Commission. The demonstration paves the way for an increased convergence of communication standards in the energy sector and home automation, and is an important step towards dissolving the traditional way of thinking in separated sectors, for example: home appliances on one side and electric vehicles on the other".

The demonstration is a vital step forward towards the homes of the future, where technology works seamlessly, making the complexity of our modern lives easier, and helping us live in a more environmentally sensitive way.” Josef Baumeister, EEBUS Director, adds: “This new language works with different communication protocols and aims to ensure that connected appliances from different brands are able to consistently communicate with a home energy manager, as well as with each other. When all connected devices in the home can exchange information in this fashion, it will be possible for the system to manage and optimise energy use – for example by taking advantage of the best energy tariffs or peak times in renewable energy generation. This will become increasingly important with the evolution of smart energy grids and increased uptake of self-generation through technologies such as photovoltaic solar panels.”
