1. How would you describe your political/leadership style in three words?

Authentic, determined and positive.

2. Is there anything you have personally achieved or done that would surprise people?

When I decided to run for office there were people who gave me a real chance of making it.

Nobody hailing from the small island of Gozo had ever made it to the European Parliament and it was difficult to picture the youngest candidate on the list to make it.

A year later I am here after convincing voters through authenticity and effective grassroot politics.

3. What is the most humbling thing you have experienced in your career?

I put a lot of emphasis on the social dimension of my politics. It is always an enlightening and encouraging experience every time I meet people who face huge barriers or are going through a difficult period but still manage to maintain a positive outlook towards life.

Sometimes we are so consumed by the challenges of our daily routines, and those little conversations give me some perspective and an understanding of the realities that others are facing. This fuels my determination for the social change I want to bring about.

4. What do you do in your free time to relax and unwind?

I enjoy walks in the countryside especially on the small island of Gozo or sometimes at one of our lovely beaches.

I love to get lost in some historical places when I’m on vacation as that is the best way to unwind from the fast-paced routine.

5. What was the most inspirational and influential book you have read and why?

Jean Sasson’s trilogy inspired me a lot. It delves into the struggle of female emancipation in the context of oppression.

It made me realise however, that although I have always enjoyed a better degree of freedom, the fight for equality is far from over in every corner of the world.
