Issue 505 | 18 November 2019

As Madrid prepares to host COP25, Spanish Socialist MEP Nicolás González Casares, a member of Parliament’s delegation, talks to us about his hopes and ambitions for the keenly-awaited climate conference and is this issue’s cover star.

In our special COP25 feature, we talk to other members of the European Parliament delegation including chair Bas Eickhout, vice-chair Peter Liese, as well as French MPs Lionel Causse and Jennifer de Temmerman, about how Europe can become a global leader on climate change.

We also have a special security and defence feature, featuring an interview with outgoing European Defence Agency Chief Executive, Jorge Domecq, who recaps the progress the EU has made in the realm of security and defence.

Also featured: Arba Kokalari and Sylwia Spurek discuss the Istanbul Convention and violence against women, Nils Muižnieks and Julia Laffranque tell us why they should become the next European Ombudsman, Dan Nica looks ahead at Horizon Europe, and Tanja Fajon talks about the valuable role communities can play in combating HIV/AIDS.

Finally, answering our five questions this issue is Danish Renew Europe MEP Karen Melchior.
