EU-Japan Partnership

In an era marked by geopolitical turbulence, the European Union and Japan are forging a deeper, more strategic partnership.

The re-election of Donald Trump, the war in Ukraine, and growing Chinese assertiveness have catalyzed a recalibration of international alliances, and EU-Japan relations are at the forefront of this shift. Traditionally anchored in economic cooperation, the relationship is expanding to encompass collaboration on security, technology, the fight against climate change, as well as in defence of human rights and the rules-based global order.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Japanese Mission to the EU, this special edition explores the evolving nature of this relationship. We speak with Ambassador Aikawa about this historic moment. MEPs Adam Bielan and Elżbieta Łukacijewska, the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Delegation to Japan, set out why the partnership is so vital for the EU’s security and economic prosperity.

We also hear from Japan Business Council in Europe, from Panasonic on collaborating on clean tech, and from Takeda, on collaboration in the health sector. The landmark security pact signed in 2024 signaled a new phase of cooperation, with joint initiatives spanning cyber defense, maritime security, and joint arms development. We reflect on this and the future with Eva Pejsova, Japan Chair at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy.
