THIS YEAR, SLOVENIA IS THE CENTRE OF THE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) puts sustainability at the core of development and promotional activities and aims at a more responsible behaviour towards the environment and the positioning of green Slovenia in the world. Hosting the prestigious global event for sustainable tourism: Global Green Destinations Day, STB points to the importance of natural treasures of our state and their sustainable management.

 

WORLD CELEBRATES GREEN TOURISM IN SLOVENIA: GLOBAL GREEN DESTINATIONS DAY, 27-28 SEPTEMBER 2016 

Upon the World Tourism Day on 27th September, Ljubljana, which is the Green Capital of Europe 2016, and Slovenia as one of the five greenest states on the planet, will host the flagship green destinations event: Global Green Destinations Day, supported by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. A 2-day conference will bring together leading experts in sustainable development and green tourism, opinion leaders, representatives of destinations, associations, hoteliers and tourist operators who strive for sustainable development in tourism. The main topics of the event will be debated at special discussion and study panels, which will address the key aspects of sustainable development in tourism, the development of smart cities and local communities, green transport for today and tomorrow, social change, sustainable management and education on green tourism. Programme includes round tables and workshops, among the most interesting experiences is the Ljubljana green outdoor classroom and the exciting study tours. There will be the exclusive awards ceremony for the Top 100 Green Destinations 2016 (according to the National Geographic Traveller Initiative) and Top 10 Green solutions under the “Destinations of Future Generations” topic. The selected destinations will receive the Quality Coast, Quality Destinations and Slovenia Green certificates. The latter is the pride of Slovenia, which is the first country in Europe that has been assessed according to international standards of sustainability.

SLOVENIA GREEN – NATIONAL SCHEME AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAMME

STB has developed the Green Scheme of Slovenian tourism and cooperated actively in various projects for the promotion of sustainable development. The Scheme is a certification programme presented under the SLOVENIA GREEN brand, which combines all efforts for a sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia. It encourages destinations as well as providers to improve their sustainable green activities and promote them by using the SLOVENIA GREEN brand. So far, more than ten destinations have been included and awarded the SLOVENIA GREEN DESTINATION certificate (Ljubljana, Kamnik, Idrija, Rogla-Zreče, Radlje ob Dravi, Cerkno, Laško, Žalec, Celje, Velenje), eighteen new destinations are currently in the evaluation process carried out under the SLOVENIA GREEN standards, and seven providers have already earned the SLOVENIA GREEN ACCOMMODATION certificate (Hotel Thermana Park Laško, Camp Koren Kobarid, Eco spa Snovik, Farm stay Urška, Ortenia - Apartments in nature, Country estate Trnulja, Hotel Park Ljubljana). 

Slovenian tourism can boast various sustainable projects, such as the EDEN – the European Destinations of Excellence and innovative projects in the framework of the Sejalec and Snovalec projects, where STB encourages sustainability-oriented, innovative and creative ideas.
