Speaking to the Guardian, the Shadow Home Secretary and Labour leadership hopeful said the UN’s high commissioner for refugees should be asked to begin registering asylum applications in the area.

Ms Cooper described the Government’s response to date as “impractical and frankly shameful”, while she also hit out at the “clueless” Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond for his description of some migrants as “marauding”.

She added that Britain should be ready to accept more refugees from conflicts like the Syrian war.
